Once upon a time I ran for political office..What was true then remains true all these years later..My slogan was ‘Your Vote is YOUR Voice’..And if you don’t vote you’ve NO right to complain or expect positive change..Early voting period has begun folks..One way to make sure you don’t have to stand in long lines November 4, 2014? VOTE NOW..In many places polls are open from sun up to sun down..Literally..I’ve included a brief video clip on why voting is so important..WE can make a difference! >>
I don’t know about y’all; but I’m a little more anxious about the U.S. Ebola situation as the days progress..Can’t lie I wasn’t thrilled to hear about the two American Ebola patients arriving on U.S. soil this summer..Even more unsettling was the first case of Ebola that showed up in Dallas this week..Dissemination of factual news/information can reduce hype, anxiety and reduce the spread of a disease like Ebola..IF it gets to that point..As with so many life instances a little knowledge can save our lives and provide us with peace of mind..So here are the facts I’ve picked up about Ebola>>
Is it possible for this disease to spread in the United States? Of course it is..Anyone who says it isn’t possible just isn’t being honest(or doesn’t know any better)..However, more than just the odds indicate it will probably not become a pandemic in the U.S. There ARE reasons ebola has spread so quickly in Western Africa…Life there is very different than life here..Culture, hygiene practices, customs(including washing the dead before burial; which btw has been a leading method for ebola to spread..) & the fact most can’t afford hospital care..All of that together perpetuated the rapid spread of the virus>>
Ebola Fast Facts
Ebola is not brand new..The first human outbreaks occurred in 1976..The virus is named after the Ebola River, where it was first recognized. There are 5 different strains ..All but one of the strains can cause illness in humans & animals(the 5th strain only affects animals)
Ebola is extremely infectious but NOT extremely contagious..An infinitesimillay small amount can cause illness..Because it isn’t transmitted via air, it is only considered moderately contagious
Humans can be infected by other humans IF they come in contact with body fluids from an infected person or contaminated objects from infected persons..Humans can also be exposed to the virus, by butchering infects animals…
Typically, symptoms appear 8 to 10 days after exposure, but incubation period can span 2 to 21 days…
Ebola is NOT transmissible if someone is asymptomatic or once one has recovered..BUT, the virus has been found in semen for up to 3 months…
According to the World Health Organization: The fatality rate can be up to 90%.
>>IF the society today allows wrongs to go unchallenged , the impression is created that those wrongs have the approval of the majority<< Quote from Barbara Jordan(Deceased American politician & leader of the Civil Rights Movement..But her words still ring true to this day)
November is going to be here in a flash..Even Republicans KNOW that for some reason Democrats do NOT turn out to vote in midterm elections. What they also know is that many of the critical midterm elections in 2010 were very close..In many states the governors races were decided by mere points! I ask myself why , especially in a time when ALL know this as factual, is it so hard to get the millenials(young) & female & people of color to the polls when it isn’t a presidential contest? Especially when those are the same groups that have the most to gain from VOTING?
There are some that say that they just don’t care anymore..That their vote doesn’t matter..I counter that sentiment with this..IF voting doesn’t matter why then are Republicans trying to disenfranchise as many voters as possible?? And if you aren’t aware of that then it will take alot more than my rant to hip you to the reality of the situation..
From Pennsylvania to Florida Republican leaders have PUBLICLY admitted that they’re counting on suppression of voters of color for their midterm victories..Pat Hickey claimed that 2014 will be a great year for Republicans because alot of minorities(are POC still the minority in America??? ) and millenials won’t turn out for the midterm elections..And they’re working HARD across our country to restrict voting rights(case in point in enacting harsh voter ID laws) Again I say IF our vote didn’t count why the heck are Republicans working SO hard to block & discourage voters??? Nothing vexes me more than to do nothing; yet expect things to CHANGE. Pfft! That is related to folks voting against their own best interests..I don’t even pretend to understand that. There are 17 House seats needed to reclaim a majority for the party that half-arse represents folks that aren’t rich(me & YOU) It is possible if we ALL get out to the polls in November and VOTE.</strong>
**There are many reasons why I feel we must all continue to maintain our right to vote.. Many folks these days apparently think our rights can’t be revoked..I humbly suggest they READ up on the history of our country.(and etc…) **
January 8, 1894. Congress repeals the Enforcement Act, which then made it easier for some states to disenfranchise African-American voters. FACT
Once Congress passed the Enforcement acts, President Grant decreed that “insurgents were in rebellion against the authority of the United States.”Between 1870 and 1871 Congress passed the Enforcement Acts — criminal codes that protected blacks’ right to vote, hold office, serve on juries, and receive equal protection of laws. If the states failed to act, the laws allowed the federal government to intervene. The target of the acts was the Ku Klux Klan, whose members were murdering many blacks and some whites because they voted, held office, or were involved with schools.
Many states were afraid to take strong action against the Klan either because the political leaders sympathized with the Klan, were members, or because they were too weak to act. A number of Republican governors were afraid of sending black militia troops to fight the Klan for fear of triggering a race war. But once Congress passed the Enforcement Acts, the situation shifted. One of the Acts, the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871, made private criminal acts federal crimes; consequently, President Grant decreed that “insurgents were in rebellion against the authority of the United States.” He sent federal troops to restore law and order to many areas where violence was raging at its worst.
In nine counties of South Carolina, martial law was declared and Klansmen were tried before predominantly black juries. Much of the credit for prosecuting the Klan belonged to Amos Ackerman, Grant’s Attorney General, who did his best to make the country aware of the extent of Klan violence. As a result of his efforts, a few hundred Klansmen were tried and sent to jail. Thousands of others fled or were let off with fines or warnings. By 1872, the Klan as an organization was broken. By the time the terror ended, thousands of blacks and hundreds of whites had been massacred or driven from their homes and communities. For a moment, it seemed that peace and Republican rule was restored. Yet within a few years, the terror was reborn and Reconstruction officially ended.
And then on January 8, 1894 the Enforcement Act was repealed~(To Be Continued)
The 2016 Presidential Election will be upon us before we know it..Are you ready? I admit I’m not! But I’m doing my homework early…Got me to wondering how many people out there, that vote, read/research/partake in due diligence prior to voting..Did y’all know that the electoral college was, in part, created (yep, by our Founding Fathers) on the premise that Americans would NOT make INTELLIGENT decisions..How’s many shades of dumb does that make you feel??? Didn’t make me feel dumb when I learned that; made me spitting MAD..As IF..For that simple reason and a slew of others I believe that the Electoral College is VERY outdated and no longer needed. Period..Mayhaps in an age where communication cross-country was by pony express, just maybe, it was necessary way back when..But these days with the ever-growing technology and the internet? NO WAY do we need the Electoral College; and that is just a tiny bit of things I think need to CHANGE to bring American politics from the 18th century to the 21st century. Certainly, what made sense back then is no longer true for the here and now>>
Yet my mind can’t help but trip over thoughts on this truly relevant topic..How MANY Americans even know what the Founding Fathers adopted? (or the whys..) How many Americans KNOW what the Electoral College IS? How many Americans know what the Constitution consists of? How many Americans know there are many national political parties other than Democratic & Republican? Like the American Beer Drinker’s Party/The Being Human Party/The Pot Party/The Party X/The Thermodynamic Law Party..& the list goes on..As I looked over the entire list I had thoughts of wtF! and OMG..All this splintering off, of viable votes, just because folks have become SO disenchanted with the current 2 party system..Not to mention those who don’t vote at all! >>
I refuse to NOT vote..Far too many of my ancestors(and yours..) have died for OUR right to vote..Double as much for me as a Black American Woman..Likewise though I also refuse to not make an educated vote..Or least as educated as I possibly can. With all my might I’m praying a lot more of my fellow Americans will do the same. There IS no excuse with the wealth of information at our fingertips and within library/bookstore walls..Still time to get onto the task of getting educated..I’m going to drop a link for any/all to peruse..And I welcome others to use this post to do the same. Let’s get ready for 2016 before we enter the voting booth! Until I read/write y’all again stay UPlifted & blessed. 4ever Sincere, Berna(the 1 & Only)

Last night I faced a dilemma..I was feeling something totally new/didn’t know how to move through IT gracefully/wasn’t sure if I liked the way it felt..So I made a conscious decision. Want to know what it WAS? Stay tuned because might just be something U can use from time to time. Because guess what? IT worked wonders for me! Here I go…So what” had” happened last night WAS>
So last night here I was feeling, and feeling! antsy, pent UP, and just couldn’t quite put my finger on why I was feeling that way. Here I was.. my first week of being in my new place, and I was still excited from that(I love my place, just love it) and yet I wasn’t feeling quite …right. I’ve become so used to being on a constant natural HIGH; that I didn’t know how to get a grip on it. I thought about calling a friend to vent & dump HOW I was feeling on them. And yet…>
…how was I going to express that I didn’t know what the heck was disturbing my groove? And I didn’t feel quite right dumping on anyone that I care about anyway! Ever had a friend call you & just dump all their stuff on you; and you were in a good mood prior? Then all of a sudden what happens? Now you’re in a funky mood too! I often find myself taking on another’s problems ..as IF I can possibly help them solve their issue-at-hand. As IF I could possibly say a sugary soft word or phrase to make things better for them..And as my mind was going over this scenario; should I call someone to just vent & whine about..about ..about what??? And then my mind began to go down the long list of friends I could call, another decision!, who was I going to call to do this great honor? of dumping my don’t-know-whats-bugging-me-but-something-IS type of mood. Right smack in the middle of all this thinking & thinking & overthinking it hit me. I suddenly knew what was wrong. I was alone. Very much alone. Not feeling lonely; just feeling ALONE. I stopped mid-thought(another thought..) and let that realization flow down over my BEing. What do I do with this ..feeling? I decided to do a very grown UP thing..I decided to ride it out & roll with the feeling of being; ALONE>
Reflective thought phrases were running rampant in my mind..I am totally ALONE..It had been a long time since I’d not been around either my parents, my sons, my exhusband, my exboyfriend,my friends, my coworkers..ALONE. I’d been waiting for this moment for a minute now; should I not be doing cart wheels? And why am I sitting here fully clothed? OMG I can run around butt-naked if I please. Had I forgotten how to do even that? Where is my Black Book I can call someone up..wow, I don’t even have a Black Book anymore. WtH? All at once I wanted to do sooo many things all at once..I ran to the closet to get my hula-hoop; I swung that around for a minute to the beat of the music.(I always have music somewhere in my background…) Oh, enough of that I ran to grab my free weights; played around with them for about 20 mins. Alright now what? Maybe I’d walk to the gym; but its TOO dark outside. Hmmm unpacked a little bit, tossed a load of clothes in the wash, put dishes away, danced!…now what? Stopped to see if the feeling of something-isn’t-perfect-in-my-world was gone. Nope, still there slightly…I was fighting off the urge to call and dump on a friend, still. Maybe I should write this out to ride this feeling out…BUT I didn’t feel like blogging . Wow, that was the first time that had happened in my brief blogging life. I felt like jumping on a trampoline, dancing!, swimming 10 laps, running a couple miles; ALL this pent UP energy. I need to release..>
I was glad I fought through the urge to call a friend or loved one with THIS…Even for someone like me, a people-loving social butterfly who LOVES to talk, there are times when words can’t be expressed …Sometimes one has to fill-in-the-blanks with quietness & stillness & yep, ALONEness. I’m far too loved to ever feel lonely; this I know and feel in my heart of hearts. And being loved is a wonderfully wonderful fabulous feeling. It IS irreplaceable and precious. Last night I learned how to ride through a feeling that didn’t quite feel good at first; and yet after I rode fought! through it I felt good just because I had! I hadn’t used the safety net of a loved one to drown out a natural normal feeling. What I feel I learned last night is that sometimes even a bad feeling ..can result in something good. Hows that y’all might ask? Because I think more than likely folks that can’t stand to be alone; rush into relationships just so they won’t be alone. But…who wants to be a part of someone’s life that doesn’t like themselves enough to spend time alone? If one doesn’t like/love themselves; how can one expect anyone else to? Yea, I had some deep thoughts last night & many days. I’m still, even at almost 50 yrs of age, learning myself and what it takes to keep me satisfied/content/HAPPY majority of the time. I’m learning that is a lifelong & most necessary process…That is one of the most beautiful things about this life. Well, thats all for now folks. Until I read/write y’all again stay UPlifted & blessed. 4ever sincere, Berna (the 1 & only)
My very first request-sort of challenge-dare to write a piece on a certain topic..Stemming from a comment I made on a fellow blogger’s page(and she has an awesome site here@NottakenNotavailable; which is listed on my faves list) Here is my best foot forward in meeting that challenge. Y’all ready ? Get set. Diving in feet first…>
Disclaimer: Feeling a need to first give a shout OUT to all my Cali friends..Love & miss y’all!(xoxoxoxoxox) To my new East Coast friends mad regard & appreciation for y’all as well..You’ve made my transition far easier than I ever anticipated. But as I am nearing leaving my dating hiatus; there are a few highly discernible differences I’ve noticed in MEN from Coast 2 Coast..Best as I can I’ll be fair to both coasts. Lets rap>
Style of Dress: It’s no secret that I adore Cali; and I’m sure I always will. But without a doubt the MEN here; outdress those on the West Coast. Mayhaps its because shorts/T’s/sandals can be worn majority of the year on the West Coast(beautiful weather & NO rainy season) ; is the reason even business dress is more relaxed than the East Coast. And while I still highly appreciate seeing a ‘fyne brother wearing the heck! out of a nice pair of jeans & a T..there is NO substitute for a well dressed brother in a suit.(or shirt & tie) OMG talk about a work of pure art. Moving quickly off that topic before I digress..>
Personality Characteristics: Though I’ve only lived on the East Coast for just shy of 2 years, yikes time flew!, I think a fair sum UP of the personality types of men is true to the known stereotypes. West Coast men are far MORE laid back, free-flowing, casual, peaceful, healthier! & liberal in their beliefs. Having said that I also personally found men on the West Coast to also be more; consistent in every way. Which I dig ! and is mandatory in my book. And though its been said Southern men follow the unspoken & spoken rules of a gentleman; I’ve found that case to be much more true for brothers I met/knew/friended/married on the West Coast. I could be wrong; but my sense of people is usually true to a T. East Coast men appear to stick to their stereotypical qualities such as unfriendly, prim, stressed the hell OUT(need to take a chill pill for real…a natural one of course ) ,UPtight, and conservative in their views & dress. And I know those sound like funky qualities but I mean them in a respectful way..Sorry guys if nothing else I’m going to keep it real & call it the way I see IT. Lets move off this topic before I piss off the male friends I’ve got here. ‘Lubs’ y’all I do!..>
Attitudes/Behaviors:I don’t even know where to start with this topic; the differences are MAJOR. Personally? I don’t think East Coast men dance enough! Nor laugh enough..maybe the stereotype , which I’ve found to be true, about West Coasters being happier ..is cause they dance, dance, dance and laugh ALOT. My first girls & only girls night out dancing here? OMG I’ve never EVA in all of my life experienced anything like it. Perhaps its the place we chose. Perhaps its because the large majority of guys there were much younger. Perhaps they just didn’t know how to dance! I’m trying to think of any excuse for it..BUT there we were a group of very attractive women wanting to dance with MEN. And yet? The majority of the time we danced as a group or with one another..I mean wtH? And one of my friends said thats the NORM here. I looked at her like she’d just spoke Greek to me..I thought and you still come out to dance? Might as well just invite the girls over & dance at home. And then!? Slowly guys started coming onto the dance floor just standing there; watching. I felt like a go-go dancer entertaining them. As IF. I love dancing; I mean I really LOVE to dance. And even if I have to IMPORT a man from the West Coast to marry ; there will be dancing and lots of it in my relationship. Never knew that was something to add to my ‘must-have-in-a-mate-list’. Jeeez and here I thought ALL brothers could dance…Can’t they? LOLLL Well they have up till I moved to this coast! There is something to be said about a man who can move on the dance floor..Enough said. Moving right along >
I’ll be gentle BUT..My #1 pet peeve is ..When a person says something stand by your WORD. Say what you mean & mean what you say. I don’t know how to translate the language of I-might-if-I-think-I-can-and-if-I-run-into-scheduling-conflicts-I-will-let-U-know-after-the-fact. Nope! that doesn’t work for me. It might fly once or twice with me; but 3rd time around? You get tossed back into the pond with the rest of the fish. With the invention of cell phones/texts/emails there is NO reason a person can’t connect to re-schedule or cancel..I know cause I’ve done it. Cares less if you have to send a smoke signal or a message in a bottle..I must say this wasn’t ever an issue on the West Coast.>
Final Word: This piece was all in fun based on some true facts. I’m a great observer; probably because I’m a half-glass full type of person. I don’t miss much..All in all I’m pleased to say I’ve made several outstanding male friends here. Which is saying alot considering the short time I’ve lived here…One stands out among all the rest. Almost instantly became a trusted friend, confidant, & mentor. Stays true to his word; every single time. And even juggling a schedule full of many balls IN the air; not once has he disappointed me in promised projects or ventures. But then again he’s not originally from the East Coast…Until I write/read y’all again stay UPlifted & blessed. 4ever sincere, Berna (the 1 & only)
This topic comes UP alot these days..It came up recently while I was chatting with a friend; I decided then I was going to bring it to my blog to dialogue. A taboo topic that need not be taboo IF folks could/would..speak openly & honestly about IT. Very hopeful to make that happen here as I do what only I can do; the way I do it..Sincerely & with finesse, somewhat?>
>WASHINGTON — Lawyers for Arizona, a state that has clashed repeatedly with the federal government on the issue of immigration, will be back at the Supreme Court on Monday defending a state law that requires proof of citizenship in order to register to vote in elections.
< I want to be clear before I dig into this topic. I’ve had issues with Arizona’s proposed citizenship law; since its very inception. Living in California at the time & quite in-the-know-about-politics(I once ran for office long ago..) ; I understood the law for what it was/IS. Voter suppression. Point blank. For the record there are already laws/statues in place for voter identity. (to ensure folks that vote are indeed American citizens) The proposed Arizona law desires measures in ADDITION to what the Federal law already requires(according to the National Voter Registration Act) Take into account Arizona didn’t introduce the idea for this law; until a very eligible Black American ran for President. Also take into account Arizona was one of the very last states(they held out, with New Hampshire, until they received a litany of heavy criticism) to make MLK, Jr birthday a paid state holiday. Coincidental? I don’t think so…Lets dig a bit deeper>
We have a fear about talking about RACE ISSUES in America..Its like a dirty little secret that the ENTIRE world knows about(that our country was built, including majority of D.C., on the backs of slaves…) and yet; it’s not talked about openly in public. Because of this being factual is my belief that racism can still exist in our country. Or least that is one of the reasons . Can’t work to erase something that “allegedly” is already dealt with…But even a blind, deaf-mute knows that the days of racism/racist attitudes/racist beliefs/racist tendencies are far from over>
*I could keep my head buried in the sand..Act as if racism is truly dead in a country I love..On a daily basis living as a Black American woman I’m not physically touched by racism..But our Black men, America’s Black MEN, are catching HELL..As a mother of 3 grown Black beautiful Black men I simply can’t pretend racism is dead. As an American I can’t turn a deaf ear & blind eye either. How many more Martin Trayvons, Chavis Carters, & Oscar Grants have to die for us to openly discuss race issues in our country? Very well could’ve been one of MY sons..two of whom are fond of wearing hoodies from time2time. To think the unthinkable could happen to them or ANY law-abiding citizen in our country; is more than I can bear to think. And more than enough to motivate me to use my freedom of speech to speak on IT..yet another thing I love about my country@freedom of speech & thought. I think therefore I blog>
I wonder everyonceinagreatwhile IF I weren’t Black if I’d care so much that racism still exists..IF I were privy to White privilege would I feel racist beliefs/treatment were unjust? IF I were White would I turn a blind eye to people’s freedom & lives being taken away without justified reason? I’d like to think I’d still feel the same as I do now. Matter of fact I’m almost willing to bet I would; because I’ve got an enormous heart. Wrong is wrong no matter the color of a person’s skin/ethnic background/cultural foundation/personal belief system.
If you start a sentence with, I’m not racist because…More than likely you probably are or have racist tendencies. And for the love of God; I wish folks would stop saying I’ve got Black/White friends so I’m not racist. As IF! I’ve said it before & I’ll say it one ‘mo time; that only means you’ve got Black or White friends. I don’t try to dis-prove or UNprove anything; or least I try not to. What I attempt to do is love & accept everyone..That inofitself has been something that is an on-going process. As I’ve evolved as I’ve learned more about different cultures and life styles; my level of acceptance has broadened. I really can’t express it any other way..So read between the lines. I believe that IGNORANCE is what lies as the foundation of racism & prejudice. What folks don’t understand or know about; they often form negative opinions about. What can also feed a person’s belief system is = what they’re taught as children. Thankfully I was taught self-pride/cultural pride/LOVE. But what about children that were taught to hate from birth? I wasn’t one who thought racism would die overnight because we’d elected a Black POTUS. Rome wasn’t built in a day; and something it took many moons to create will take more than a minute to change…What I do think is that as a country WE can do better. The next 4 years will be a time of great positive change for our country..Or so its my belief based on many factors. That is another topic for another time. However having said all of that; there is NO time like the present to do what is right. I’m hoping we can do it together. *One love*
I make this look ALOT easier than it really “tis..Alot of my commentary about “being single & waiting for my ‘The One’ might come across as IF it is always …A walk in the park/through rows & rows of rose petals/and full of fabulous, sunny days..While 99.9% of my days ARE full of sunshine/tons of smiles/& even more laughter; it is some of those after-hour moments that can be trying at best. Shows like ‘Sex in the City‘ & even the black casted “Girlfriends‘; didn’t always reveal the “real” scoop. …
Majority of the time I can’t/won’t lie; my vibe is right and tight. No complaints with being single & sexy other than…I’m ready to NOT be single! I am ready for my onceinalifetimeloveofalifetime. And before I dive in deeper this song will or should set the background for the foreground; that I’m getting ready to lay down. Just so there are no misinterpretations of where I’m coming from..
Now that its been established the phase of life I’m in…Its the notsofabulous moments when thoughts of temptation can creep into the crevices of my mind..Usually right before I go to sleep when I’m finally; still. Those times when the part of my inner self? has doubts>
That “trouble-making” part of self that attempts to disturb my groove of feeling hecka-fied and awesome..Asks funky questions like: What IF waiting on “the 1” is for naught?!? Where the heck is HE? Is he lost??? Is time spent going to make up for these months of waiting? Why isn’t THE time for love right now? Maybe Mr Right Now is better than waiting for Mr Right..
I don’t profess to speak for all Black women..BUT I can not be the only one going through IT. However I am so busy it isn’t often I have time to even get “that lonely feeling”. That feeling of remembrance…of how sweet love can be and IS. *sigh* Certainly I can’t be the only Sista trying to walk the walk; and talk the talk…Single by choice and actually I’m not even dating yet, lol!, BUT I’m close to being ready to date..I guess I was hoping I’d run into Mr Right and he’d be SO awesome, that I’d be forced to give up my “dating hiatus”. After all I am a dreamer; and I dream BIG and in color…
Truth be told I’ve never waited on love before..this is my very first time. There isn’t much of my adult life that I’ve spent *single and unattached*. I’m far more used to being part of a love union than..this. I don’t even know if I’m doing this right! How does one know when it is their very first time? And how much longer can I endure those late night thoughts that creep in? Not sure how many more sheep I can count..
That nagging feeling that comes when my body is tired yet..mymindisstillracing gets me SO amped up I think about the unthinkable. A long distance relationship. Ugh! Or what about joining an internet dating site? Double Ugh! But holding on the hope of all hopes that not ALL of the outstanding brothers are married..IF so where the heck are they?! I keep running smack into hot married ones on this coast. Triple Ugh! And I refuse to go down that road…Did all of the hot, outstanding ,single, brothers move to the right coast when I relocated to the left coast?!?? OMG
The really great news? I don’t have these type of thoughts often..though honestly I’ve had them alot more than when I first decided to take a breather from dating..More fabulous news? Overall the results have far exceeded what I’d wished for. Doing ‘me’ for a minute was one of the best decisions of my life..And I know, in my heart of hearts , I’m so close to the finish line. I can feel it! I can and will overcome those “nagging” late night thoughts & temptations..because settling now would truly mean I’d wasted alot of precious time learning me/doing me/reaching for my dreams, etc etc yada yada. And the best news of all? I feel so much better after this rant and venting it all out…exhaling is necessary from timetotime. Thank you GOD for blogging ;for its served as such a sweet release. Problem solved for now…
February is Black History Month in America…The controversial question that still begs 2 be answered IS= Does America really NEED a Black History Month? And if so, why is it important? Also, is ONE month tribute ENOUGH? For those that are BLACK; aren’t ya’ll BLACK every single day? For those that aren’t Black ; do you attempt to learn anything new regarding Black History during February? One last question I’ll give my views on= IS Black History Month just a “token” given to Blacks to put a band-aid on old wounds? WHY is it so difficult to have a decent, honest, OPEN dialogue about RACE still in America today? ~~~~~ First, a brief history lesson on how Black History Month came to be. Or do ya’ll already know? Oh well , for those that don’t know it began because of the efforts of Dr. Carter G. Woodson & Rev. Jessie E. Moorland. Dr. Woodson was the former son of SLAVES and the SECOND Black person in history to receive a degree from Harvard University. Because Dr. Woodson felt preserving one’s heritage was important he urged the fraternity, Omega Psi Phi, to create ‘Negro History and Literature Week’ in 1920. He “chose” February to honor two men who had a great deal to do with altering the future of Black Americans. President Abraham Lincoln and Abolitionist Frederick Douglas(both men were born in February) Thus the creation of what we now celebrate as Black History Month in America was born…
I’ll briefly answer my own questions I posed earlier..Later, I’ll dig deeper. First of all , NO, Black History Month, isn’t a “token” given to Blacks in America for any old wounds caused by years & years & years & YEARS of slavery…As I’ve briefly explained earlier Black History Month was created by a Black man for Black American citizens to feel a sense of PRIDE about themselves..Something that was badly neeeeeeded when he first worked so diligently to have it created. Next, do I feel America still needs a Black History Month? Yes, I sure DO…Why is Black History Month important? I’ll dig deeper into that later. Aren’t Black Americans Black & proud every day and not just during Black History Month? Well , I sure AM. Every morning when my feet hit the floor and I look in the mirror I know several things for sure. I AM BLACK. I am a WOMAN. I am a loved child of GOD. Not necessarily in that order but being Black is always first…and I make no apologies for that. But later I will try to explain why. And the last question=WHY in the heck is it so very difficult to have an open & honest dialogue(among Blacks , Whites, and any other race/color/creed) about RACE in America??????! Especially when WE all know it is still very much an issue in our country….
For the naysayers, Black and White, who want to keep their heads in the sand; and think RACE issues don’t still exist in our country…Ask President Obama’s good friend Henry Louis Gates, Jr if it does. A highly! educated Black man who in recent years was reminded that NO matter how educated he was/is..he is still BLACK. Not even being the close friend of the President of the United States could save him from public humiliation. Just because WE don’t discuss race issues doesn’t meant it isn’t still an issue…And mayhaps IF we did discuss it more(in a civil fashion..) it could finally begin to solve the issue. Unless you were blind and deaf you certainly have seen RACE raise its ugly head just prior to and since President Obama became President of the United States…I don’t have enough time to list all the ways but ya’ll can google all the incidents/things said/happenings if you don’t believe me..
In my opinion , Black History Month, is necessary to educate ALL American citizens..Quiet as kept there are MANY Blacks who don’t even know their own history! For IF they did why would “some” feel Black History Month is no longer necessary? Begun by a Black man to give Blacks a sense of pride; I truly think it is still needed for that very reason..and more. Mayhaps if other races are educated about Blacks the race issues would cease! As I’ve said many times before we are ALL far more alike ; than different. And often times ignorance about a topic can cause people to have distorted beliefs/thoughts about said topic. Note to parents: IF you’re depending on the American public educational system to teach your child about being BLACK or about other races or Black History …it won’t happen! Get them books, share their family tree with them/ share with them family history stories..etc..KNOWLEDGE is POWER. My sincere hope/prayer is that people are indeed learning something new every single time Black History Month rolls around…As much as I’ve studied Black History including my own family history; I’m still learning new things my dang self. It is closed minds that will take far longer to move past the old ways of thinking…
~~As a person I love ALL people…of all races/creeds/beliefs. As a Catholic Christian I know we are ALL loved children of GOD. I don’t understand how any Christian could with good conscience call themselves a Christian and yet HATE with the level of hate I’ve seen/witnessed/experienced! ; simply based on the color of one’s skin. Matter of fact there is no one on this planet I hate. There are a handful of people I ‘ve run into that I don’t care for; real talk. But I don’t hate them. I just don’t care to spend ANY of my precious time being around them nor speaking of them. And only one of them isn’t Black.. I’m still praying on how to get past that…never said I was perfect.
Quite honestly in recent years I’ve heard the N word used more by Blacks than anyone else..As a word of affection no less! What kind of shiiite is that?!? You can’t turn a WORD thats past is so negative that Blacks died cause they REFUSED to be called that word; into a positive word. I don’t care if it is JUST a word. I don’t allow it to be said in my surroundings . And I didn’t allow our sons to say it either…the ignorance has to stop somewhere. And I draw the line there. There is enough ignorance about what is or isn’t racism to wrap around our country a cazillion times..For the record there is a difference between racism and prejudice. Every time any of us labels a person by race, unless asked to describe someone by their race, we are exhibiting our prejudice. I’ve got my hand raised high; I’ve done it. And I try to catch myself but I’ve done it…I’m still working on that too. More proof I’m not perfect. In closing my sincere hope is that we can open up honest exchanges about RACE our country…Its past time. We’ve just TOGETHER put into office , for the 2nd time, the first ever Black man in the highest position of our country. That alone wasn’t enough to stomp out racism..Anyone who thought that was going to be enough wasn’t thinking logically. Rome wasn’t built in a day…nor can something so monumental be solved in one day or action. BUT we’re making progress…and that is wonderful! Like any good parent my DREAM is for my sons to live in a country that they are considered EQUAL…judged based not on the color of their skin..but ALLL of their years of education, their experience, their HEARTS, and all of their hard work. I co-raised my sons to LOVE all people and they do! I refused to teach them to hate..What we did do was teach them to be PROUD of who they are. Which includes embracing their Black heritage. One can’t know where the heck they’re going in life; if they don’t know who they are & where they’ve come from. And while I do have a preference for who will be my love mate/life mate; I’m not racist. Though! I’ve had White guys who have asked me out say they felt that was racist. It isn’t . It is a preference. I just happen to be HONEST about my preference from the jump…Chalk it up to the level of highest respect I have for my highest male role model. My Father/Daddy who is Black..Little girls either are attracted to men like their Fathers or the opposite…I fall into the first category. Think about the preferences people have with who they’re attracted to??? Blondes. Women with big boobs.(even if they’re FAKE) Women with small waists & big butts. Women with small waists/big butts & big boobs! How about women who won’t date a man under 6 foot? Or won’t date anyone that isn’t fit or fyneeeee as heck. My preference just happens to involve skin color. And I absolutely LOVE chocolate skin..and the swagger of a confident brother??? Omg, no substitute for that…. Also, if anyone out there reading this has anything to add or correct me on things I’ve written; feel free. I’m ready to rap if you are…4ever sincere, Berna (the 1 & only)
**In observance of this FABULOUS holiday@ Martin Luther King, Jr day..lays ripe the opportunity to speak on a couple topics I adore. Education. Youth. Love. Before I dig in …I hope any/all out there that have this day off from work give a bit of today to say, THANK YOU, Martin Luther King, Jr. for giving US all you had(including your life..) unselfishly so that we might have the freedoms we have today. I/WE appreciate YOU. …
**The above quote @”I have decided to stick with LOVE..Hate is too great a burden to bear”..is in my belief the BEST quote I’ve ever been blessed enough to read. And with all of my BEing I’m also trying to live that out loud as well. There is a beauty in those words and in that sentiment and IF only that message can truly spread like FIRE..what a different country, world even!, this would be. Can’t WE all muster UP the love within US and share it?!? I’ve got my hand held UP high. I think WE can. YES we can!
>>Last night I happened to be in attendance at a event hosted NationWide (in 400 locations…) by a predominantly Black sorority (*round of applause for the ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY) in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr..Called a day of service for MLK,Jr. The overall message was CLEAR..Service WE must & should all be doing to educate, enlighten, and EMPOWER the youth(our future!) There was a panel(which consisted of rising Black leaders & predominant business owners/young Black CEO of a major local bank!/even a newly appointed Assistant City Manager; highly impressive panel regardless of color. Progress! There was a moderator present asking each panelist what “their” advice/suggestions/expertise based on experience was for the YOUTH and for progression for US as a community. In the audience was a group of promising youth already marked as UP and rising..I personally felt, and wished, more youth had been present. But it was a great jump start, I hope!, for the adults in the audience to GO forth and spread the message to others to reach OUT and educate, enlighten, and empower! the youth. The fact that this exact premise was also being held concurrently(same day… ) in 400 other locations across our great Nation warmed MY heart and encouraged me to continue hoping, praying! , that WE shall overcome and continue to progress for I also(like MLK, Jr.) have a dream…
**I have a dream! I dream of a time and space when my 3 beautiful, intelligent, personable, loving , educated, artistic, athletic BLACK sons(my Black princes!) will one day be judged based NOT on the color of their skin…but judged based on who they ARE. Not asking for 2 much; just asking for what ANY other mother longs for her sons. I long for a day when folks don’t fear when walking past my 3 Black sons; for they’re armed with NO weapon other than their COLLEGE DEGREE‘s. Bred & raised with nonviolence and wishing for nothing more than to aspire to their dreams!/their aspirations/their GOALS. I have a dream! I dream of a time and space in which my future grandbabies won’t be LABELED as Black, as Negro, as African-American nor have to fill out that slot on ANY form. I would love for that day to come when people are just labeled as..PEOPLE. Yes, I have a dream! On this day that just happens to also be the day when for the 2nd time in HISTORY; a Black brother is being publically sworn in as President of the United States of America..I dream that ONE day that fact won’t BE so remarkable. I have a dream! I dream of a time and space when to describe people NONE of us label each other as ..The White woman that was there OR! The Black man that was there. WE are all just people…And WE all have alot more in common than different. How beautiful it IS when we just sit and chat/or vibe over the Net/or rap face 2 face and share of ourselves…I have a dream! I dream of a time and space when WOMEN of any color are compensated at the same level as MEN. (based on what they earn & rightfully deserve) I have a dream! When love brings people 2gether. And keeeeeps people 2gether. For LOVE can over-ride any division that lays between US. LOVE can conquer even what seems impossible. I believe. I believe! And I have a dream…As always folks stay UPlifted & blessed. Remember 2 count your blessings 2day and everyday. 4ever Sincere, Berna (the 1 n only)
>In my heart of hearts I think it means WE didn’t get half as much as WE deserved..Why? Because a bunch of grown men are acting like children and can’t play well together in the sand box..There was cursing! that went on and more than likely emotional ‘Boner probably broke down into tears at some point. I wish I could’ve been a fly on the wall during these sessions. Lest WE forget these folks are “civil servants” which means they work for US and are only in their LOFTY positions because of the moolah! that “common working folks” pay in taxes..which funds their salaries and LIFElong health benefits. (yep, not bad for as little as a 4 yr gig, huh? ) Well, I think at this point we all know what should’ve happened or been gained; from the deals that were on the table. And should’ve happened LONG before time wound down 2 the very last minute..Question is. Does anyone out there really think IT was something that was UNdecided till the last minute as it was reported? (and highly advertised..) I do NOT think so. My opinion? I’ll save that for the follow UP after posting what the fiscal cliff deal results mean to us:
Here is the breakdown:
>I think this is about as good as it was going to get..given the circumstances President Obama is having to work with. This is hardly as good as it could’ve been or should’ve been. I think , however, this was hammered out and deals dealt between the parties, LONG before it was announced. I, for one, am truly sick N tyeeeeed of the Hollywood staged smoke N mirrors dance that comes from D.C. Do they think we’re all that gullible? I don’t want entertainment coming out of D.C. I want positive results. I want the people I voted for , whose jobs depend on MY and your vote!, to do their dang JOB. I don’t feel fighting should be allowed during these sessions. And certainly not cursing each other out. WTH? is that about??? That isn’t professional nor does it show self discipline. I personally feeeeel if one can’t maintain professional conduct they should toss them OUT..they lose their say/vote..and then move forward. Too much time is wasted with all the in-fighting. DON’T THEY REALIZE WE ARE ALL WATCHING THEM? DON’T THEY CARE THAT THEIR CHILDREN ARE WATCHING? HOW ABOUT THE FACT THAT A COUNTRY FULL OF PEOPLE DEPEND ON THEM TO GET THINGS DONE IN A TIMELY MANNER? *exhaling* I feeeeel so much better now that I got that off my chest. Am I content with this deal? I guess so…because I know it could’ve been a whole lot LESS gained. However, the fight is far from over. Yep! In a couple months it will be more of the same ..BUT hopefully next round we’ll get a little bit more out of the deal.
Figure I might as well end this year right by making my carbon mark of what I feel some of the most memorable highlights were from 2012. A year I don’t think any of us will soon forget. From top to bottom of what I rank in importance..Of course with my own personal touch for narration hope ya’ll see something here that pleases you to recall. Ready? Get set..here we GO
As the opening pic I’ve posted indicates my #1 pick for the single most memorable highlight from 2012 is President Barack Obama winning the 2012 Presidential Election. Making history for the 2nd time as a Black man in America..yep! I said it , Black. Some said it was an accident for him to be elected the first time..which I don’t agree with..it took a GREAT effort by millions of us Americans that voted him IN. 2nd time around? No one can utter the words accident. Or they can but no one is listening…Personally? I voted for President Barack Obama to do in this 4 years what he was consistently “blocked” from doing the 1st four years. Even having had so much opposition the list of achievements of this administration is beyond commendable and far too long 2 list now. (that is another topic for another time…) I was so excited about the upcoming election I wrote a tribute to Pres. Obama..(attached here also as a blog entry) N I sent it to the White House. Lol! confidence isn’t something I’m lacking in..Congrats 2 President Barack Obama and to my fellow Americans for choosing the best candidate , once again!, that we’ve had in a very long time…
Hands down this is one of the BEST things I did in 2012. I took my eldest son’s advice N read this book. WOW changed my life and elevated my health to a whole different level . N because to check it out 3 times at the library I was in a 2 week waiting list; obviously alot of other folks read it also. Didn’t U? Who wouldn’t read a book from a nutrition professional that loooooks like the one on the cover of this book?? Yep, that is her..and I’m sorry I’ll never B in line to buy Dr.Phil’s book on dieting, as IF, lol!..but I will to buy Kimberly Synder’s . The info in her book works if you work it…Enough said.
On February 11, 2012 the world lost one of its BEST singers of all time…Beautiful and gifted from God with a voice like NO other; Whitney Houston. Thank you Whitney for providing me with lyrics/music that perfectly expressed what I was feeling or going through timeNtime again with your songs. You left your mark forever on this earth in this lifetime N I know you’re finally out of your personal pain by heading home . Your job was complete..you’re missed none-the-less.
Obamacare was UPheld by the Supreme Court in November 2012. All I’ve got to say about that at this time(because I could go on N on N on if I list all that I feel..) is…THANK YOU GOD for making this happen. Period.
On August 2, 2012 at 16 yrs of age! Ms Gabrielle Douglas earned her 2nd Olympic Gold Medal and became the 1st(first) Black Olympic All Around Gold Medalist. I couldn’t be prouder of her as a Black woman N as an American. She was/is amazing to watch perform..spelllbound when I watch her. YOU GO BABYGIRL!
Lebron got his ring, finally! Miami Heat won 121-106 over Oklahoma City Thunder as 2012 NBA Champions..Sorry Lebron but I was pulling for the under dogs @Oklahoma. Seriously still think they ARE the better team as far as being team players…another topic for another time. And guess what? That is one gaudy UGLY ring I don’t care how much it is worth!
Serena N Venus Williams got to pair UP again 2 play in the 2012 Summer Olympics..even with all of Venus’s health issues/struggles. Not much can hold a determined, strong Sista down when she’s reaching for all of her goals/dreams. Really dig these young ladies work ethic & determination N from such a humble background..they serve as an inspiration to many that one can do ANYthing one sets their mind to DO..The Williams girls ROCK
Colorado did what we attempted to vote IN when I was still in California..they banned the prohibition on marijuana. N while I’ll never B one to blaze UP a pot joint; I feel it should B legalized nationwide. It has medicinal purposes and can help millions…And it is because of millions of “benjamins” being made by pharmaceutical companies, that is behind maryjane *NOT* being legalized on a nationwide basis. Just my opinion…(and yet another topic for another time) Big UPs to Colorado for cutting thru the Bull Shiiite green tape N getting the job done.
I hope these standing desks become the norm here in our country…The British Medical Journal has been quoted@IF Americans could limit the amount of time they sit to 3 hours or less every day , they would add 2 years to their lives. Sum up: Sitting is killing US…far more of a threat than just a big, fat fanny from sitting. I’m glad my job involves alot of getting UP and moving around alot from 8-5 M-F. Whew!
In August 2012 Apple officially becomes the most valuable company EVER…Jeeeez thats alot of mooolah!
**Well, I decided to wrap this up because I could literally post a ton more memorable highlights..enough is enough. Last but not least though 2012, 2 months ago , became the year I began my very 1st blog site. This one! And the experience thus far has exceeded any expectation I had. Thank you ALL for being a part of my beautiful experience N life journey…Stay UPlifted N blessed. 4ever sincere Berna(the 1 N only)
Disclaimer: Please read what I’m saying before assuming what I’m saying. I’m not saying I am not in love with my African roots nor am I saying I don’t love that I was born American. I love that both of those things are FACTUAL. Understand also that we all have opinions N are entitled to them. When we don’t agree its perfectly fine to agree 2 disagree. I wrote what I’m going to share in response to a very well written piece(from a blogger on this site) on this very topic. It is a controversial topic yet not one that I fear opening for dialogue. So feel free to read with an open mind & ears N lets rap..
*Whats in a name? Some might ask that question but I don’t. Lets see if I can properly express how I feel about being “labeled” either Black or African-American.
What is IT with our country having to label folks anyway?!? Shouldn’t it be a personal choice? Why can’t we put OTHER as I’ve seen “others” allowed to do? Others that don’t exactly fit to a T the multiple choice slots on all the forms WE have to fill out in this lifetime…What about the situations folks that are White yet from Africa fall into? Are THEY African-American when they become American citizens? I actually meant a guy that fit that case scenario; he was a coworker . Awesome guy and we had conversation after conversation over this exact subject matter. Interesting to say the least!
Personally? I identify with my BLACKness before any other title/label I hold. When my feet hit the floor in the morning & I look in the mirror the 1st thing I see N know I am is BLACK. N I loveeeeee that I was created in the image of Jesus.(another topic for another time..) There is nothing else I’d rather have been created as..God makes NO mistakes. But I digress..
Some in the generations behind me feel that its oldskool to want to be labeled as Black. I figure we’re all entitled to our opinion..and I’m open to dialogue with anyone who can properly argue their points. But at the beginning and end of the day aren’t we all still..Black? A point those in favor of the African – American label make is that to NOT use the term is to deny our tie to the motherland. Africa…Hmmmm. Really??? I’d like to take a poll to see how many Blacks a/k/a African-Americans truly know a thing about their roots! Where they hail from in Africa? Where there ancestors first landed in America? How they acquired their birth surname…was it acquired from their slave master? Should the name @ African-American be carried by folks who have NO clue where they come from? Must I be labeled with the term African-American to be a PROUD Black Sista? I think NOT. And who is the infamous “they” that gets to determine how I’m going to be labeled anyway? Shouldn’t I have a VOTE in what I’m going to be labeled? In my life journey I’ve gone from Negro to Afro-American to BLACK to African-American..heck its surprising I’m NOT confused my own dang self about my..identity! And yet we sit back N wonder why generations behind us are out of touch with who they ARE.
I am BLACK. I am American. Period. Exclamation point. When 1st I wake I’m a BLACK woman/daughter/sister/mother..in that order. Every single day of my 49 yr old life. That is who I am. Regardless of who feels they have the right to “label” me it won’t change who I am. And I sincerely hope that is how more folks , BLACK folks, begin to look at it. And NOT let such topics further divide US…I love people. All people from all walks of life and ethnic backgrounds. I just happen to be part of a bloodline of the very 1st line of people on Earth. How could one not be extremely proud about that?**
>In summation when WE(or anyone actually..) let “others” define who WE are & then re-define(or place a title on..) over N over N over again ..it is NO small wonder some in my generation and many in those behind my generation..have lost sight of WHO they are. Or least that is the way I see it.<
Wishing all that read this love, joy and peace. Stay UPlifted & blessed. 4ever sincere, Berna(the 1 N only)
Alright as promised to MYself & to ya’ll I’ve been working on my 2nd tribute to ‘President Barack Obama’..ooooooo that feeeeels SO good to B able to say that for a n o t h e r FOUR years! Was able to complete my 1st tribute right before Election Day N my goal to complete Part 2 is President Obama’s 2nd! Inauguration date approx. a month from now. Yep time is flying N waits for none of us ..For those who are just joining in reading the 1st tribute I penned to President Obama is listed on the right hand side of my page..Let your fingers do the walking (& clicking) and check it out. Its one of 2 pieces I’ve written that I’m elated with the finished product..and so very important to me. Hoping I can B fully amped UP by tomorrow to complete the draft of ‘a DREAM inferred’. So stay tuned folks because I’m just getting started N I’ve got a feeeeeeling it will B well worth the wait. Til we link up again stay UPlifted N Blessed. 4ever sincere, Berna(the 1 N only)
>Update: I’m still working on this…2day is Dec. 15th and I anticipate completing this prior to President Obama’s Inauguration date so stay tuned <
44th N 45th soon to BE
So personal its become to me
This entire political process
I sincerely have to confess
I’ve grown tyeeeed of this mess!
My feelings are difficult to compress
With sincerity and conviction I will try to express…
Who knew that even with 4 years of slow but steady progress
(And) endured every single ploy, stall tactics, N Republican tests
Having given Americans his all N his very best
That President Obama would still have to impress
Not only the fickle masses but some of his very OWN
Certainly the latter couldn’t have even possibly known
The irreversible damage done by their blatant treason
*Lord, why must some of us need more of a reason…
2 stand united other than having been born BLACK?*
I must apologize for I digress
My mental still trying to digest…
The 3 ring circus that has become our political process
Whats going to happen from day 2 day is anyone’s guess
Bear with me as I break this down N take it apart
Feeeeeling every keystroke written word in my heart**
May author of ‘Dreams of My Father’ hear my prayer
N please know for some of us this is a personal affair
Your ‘Audacity of Hope’ motivated me to keep reaching
To always dare to dream/share what I’ve learned/ N to
You’ve inspired Black children they can BE anything they aspire to be
That message also resounded ever so loudly to ME
When a little boy asked to touch your hair * a request so rare
You understood why N let him * because you truly care…
I pray for YOU each and every single day when I rise
Daily silently hoping your values you won’t compromise
Many of us know this race shouldn’t rightfully be close
Unless Americans sincerely want yet another ‘Bush dose
WE stand behind you millions mighty and forever strong
Wanting you to stay in the White House where YOU belong!
