Once upon a time I ran for political office..What was true then remains true all these years later..My slogan was ‘Your Vote is YOUR Voice’..And if you don’t vote you’ve NO right to complain or expect positive change..Early voting period has begun folks..One way to make sure you don’t have to stand in long lines November 4, 2014? VOTE NOW..In many places polls are open from sun up to sun down..Literally..I’ve included a brief video clip on why voting is so important..WE can make a difference! >>
>>IF the society today allows wrongs to go unchallenged , the impression is created that those wrongs have the approval of the majority<< Quote from Barbara Jordan(Deceased American politician & leader of the Civil Rights Movement..But her words still ring true to this day)
November is going to be here in a flash..Even Republicans KNOW that for some reason Democrats do NOT turn out to vote in midterm elections. What they also know is that many of the critical midterm elections in 2010 were very close..In many states the governors races were decided by mere points! I ask myself why , especially in a time when ALL know this as factual, is it so hard to get the millenials(young) & female & people of color to the polls when it isn’t a presidential contest? Especially when those are the same groups that have the most to gain from VOTING?
There are some that say that they just don’t care anymore..That their vote doesn’t matter..I counter that sentiment with this..IF voting doesn’t matter why then are Republicans trying to disenfranchise as many voters as possible?? And if you aren’t aware of that then it will take alot more than my rant to hip you to the reality of the situation..
From Pennsylvania to Florida Republican leaders have PUBLICLY admitted that they’re counting on suppression of voters of color for their midterm victories..Pat Hickey claimed that 2014 will be a great year for Republicans because alot of minorities(are POC still the minority in America??? ) and millenials won’t turn out for the midterm elections..And they’re working HARD across our country to restrict voting rights(case in point in enacting harsh voter ID laws) Again I say IF our vote didn’t count why the heck are Republicans working SO hard to block & discourage voters??? Nothing vexes me more than to do nothing; yet expect things to CHANGE. Pfft! That is related to folks voting against their own best interests..I don’t even pretend to understand that. There are 17 House seats needed to reclaim a majority for the party that half-arse represents folks that aren’t rich(me & YOU) It is possible if we ALL get out to the polls in November and VOTE.</strong>
The 2016 Presidential Election will be upon us before we know it..Are you ready? I admit I’m not! But I’m doing my homework early…Got me to wondering how many people out there, that vote, read/research/partake in due diligence prior to voting..Did y’all know that the electoral college was, in part, created (yep, by our Founding Fathers) on the premise that Americans would NOT make INTELLIGENT decisions..How’s many shades of dumb does that make you feel??? Didn’t make me feel dumb when I learned that; made me spitting MAD..As IF..For that simple reason and a slew of others I believe that the Electoral College is VERY outdated and no longer needed. Period..Mayhaps in an age where communication cross-country was by pony express, just maybe, it was necessary way back when..But these days with the ever-growing technology and the internet? NO WAY do we need the Electoral College; and that is just a tiny bit of things I think need to CHANGE to bring American politics from the 18th century to the 21st century. Certainly, what made sense back then is no longer true for the here and now>>
Yet my mind can’t help but trip over thoughts on this truly relevant topic..How MANY Americans even know what the Founding Fathers adopted? (or the whys..) How many Americans KNOW what the Electoral College IS? How many Americans know what the Constitution consists of? How many Americans know there are many national political parties other than Democratic & Republican? Like the American Beer Drinker’s Party/The Being Human Party/The Pot Party/The Party X/The Thermodynamic Law Party..& the list goes on..As I looked over the entire list I had thoughts of wtF! and OMG..All this splintering off, of viable votes, just because folks have become SO disenchanted with the current 2 party system..Not to mention those who don’t vote at all! >>
I refuse to NOT vote..Far too many of my ancestors(and yours..) have died for OUR right to vote..Double as much for me as a Black American Woman..Likewise though I also refuse to not make an educated vote..Or least as educated as I possibly can. With all my might I’m praying a lot more of my fellow Americans will do the same. There IS no excuse with the wealth of information at our fingertips and within library/bookstore walls..Still time to get onto the task of getting educated..I’m going to drop a link for any/all to peruse..And I welcome others to use this post to do the same. Let’s get ready for 2016 before we enter the voting booth! Until I read/write y’all again stay UPlifted & blessed. 4ever Sincere, Berna(the 1 & Only)
Direct link to The Constitution via our White House website..A good place to begin for those that seek to learn more about our political system>>
If you’re not already tracking & researching candidates for the next Presidential Election; you’re LATE. Or least that is the way I see it..This is a brief list of the folks I feel are going to attempt to become the next POTUS.
HILLARY CLINTON..No doubt in my mind Hillary is going to make a run for it..She knows she had a HUGE following of women when she last ran..Her ego was far too big to accept an invite to become V.P. by President Obama..Hillary longs to BE the POTUS..She was the backbone behind Bill when he was in office; and she won’t stop until she tries one more time to be the ‘Head Mofo in Charge’. Mark my words she IS going to run in 2016>>
JOE BIDEN..Old as he is; Joe might decide to take the plunge one more time for old times sake! I don’t think he stands a chance; but I also never anticipated the 3 ring-circus that landed Bush in the White House either..Just hope folks are paying more attention these days. *sigh*>>
CORY BOOKER..His speech at the DNC wasn’t as awesome as when Obama blew the world’s socks off with his; BUT he IS gaining attention & recognition..Don’t count him out; regardless of whether he says he isn’t going to run or not. He WILL run soon..More than likely he’ll test the waters in 2016>>
ELIZABETH WARREN..She just might want it after a taste of being in the spotlight..Her work on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is no small achievement..Not sure if its enough to call for a run for the White House though..But there is a remote possibility..I’ve seen stranger things happen in recent years regarding our Presidential Elections! >>
ANTONIO VILLARAIGOSA..I think he likes the idea of being the 1st Latino President..Even though he isn’t yet saying he’ll run; I think he will. Anyone want to bet on IT?>>
DEVAL PATRICK..Another one that says he won’t run in 2016..Close friend of Obama & I personally think he WILL run..Many folks have said they wouldn’t run; ended up running for past presidential elections..Time will tell</strong>>>
ANDREW CUOMO..Might be a long shot; but I think he will run…His chances are weak in my opinion…But I said that about the last Bush that ran. Twice! So who knows..>>
MICHELLE OBAMA..Personally? I think she is too far devoted to Motherhood to run..BUT I’d LOVE to see her make a run for it..How awesome to see her win on the heels of her husband’s double terms! Little chance she’ll run though; but I’m a dreamer…>>
Y’all ready for 2016 Presidential Election yet?
..~~Some of the BEST moments in life are the ones you cannot tell anyone about…~~
I was nominated for the BEST MOMENT award..Woooo hoooo..As a new blogger its awesome to be read & appreciated by fellow bloggers..My list of over 130 blog spots on WordPress is an amazing list..Chocked full of people I’d never met before I joined WordPress almost a year ago..(with the exception of the person who introduced me to WordPress..) It is with pride I’ll display my BEST MOMENT award logo on my page & sincere thanks to ‘mishunderstood’ for the nomination. Also many thanks for making me feel so VERY special when I recently joined the Fabulous 50s group! I’ll first list my nominees & then the rules of this award(I changed the 15 nominees to 7..Choosing 7 was tough! But 7 is after all a lucky number..) Well actually first check out the link to ‘mishunderstood’s’ blog spot; she always has something positive to read or look at(pictures) on her blog. http://mishunderstood.wordpress.com/2013/09/05/best-moments/
My first nominee is one of the very first blog spots I became hooked ON..He uses humor , wit, and a ton of intelligence to share insightful/POLITICAL, and current events from our country to all over the world..He keeps us abreast of important matters; while also making us smile..Even when it’s not good NEWS. The one & ONLY , List of X.
This next nominee is tied for my #1 fave WordPress blog..He IS always in touch with anything there is to know or read about affairs in D.C..and all political matters of great concern. He researches and lays the FACTS out and always has interesting comments from his loyal audience..He also shares my loyalty in following & supporting our POTUS@ President Barack Obama..And the pictures on his blog site are always a pleasure to see..He’s a true OBAMACRAT through & through! He’s included ALOT of facts/stories about Black History that I personally feel every American could benefit from reading..
When I want my spiritual fix on WordPress this is my go-to spot! She’s my Sista & my church sister; and she’s the one who introduced me to WordPress..Relentless, hard-working, and the QUEEN of multi-tasking..*round of applause* and Yay!
I stumbled across this next blog site because it was Freshly Pressed months ago..A story about her beautiful daughter’s smile! There is always something joyful, beautiful , insightful to read on her blog spot..Hails from Africa and she has a heart of GOLD. So very glad I can call her ‘friend’..
Her name says it ALL..She IS an AWAKE Black Woman..A TON of insight on her blog spot! I’ve yet to read all of it, yet, when I’m reading there I almost always learn something NEW..She’s also included many, many links on her page to other blog sites that are positive & cultural.
This next blog spot spreads a positive message..I always have a warm & fuzzy feeling after reading and sharing comments on his page..
This blog spot is one of the most recent I’ve added to my faves list..I’ve enjoyed interacting with her on both of our spots..Yet another blog spot that I get that nice warm & fuzzy feeling after reading there.
** The rules are as follows for all nominees; including myself(I’ll list my two lists of 7 following the rules) Nominees should do the following(if you wish)=
1. Copy and post the BEST MOMENTS logo on your blog page. (You’ll see mine freshly posted in my side bar)
2. Link back to the person who nominated you…
3. State 7 things about yourself…
4. Nominate 7 other bloggers
5. Name 7 moments you experienced that are dear to your heart..
*** Here are my 2 lists**
7 Things About Myself=
1. I’m a TRUE Cancer in almost every sense of the word..With the exception of the moody part..Thankfully I grew out of that as I grew older/matured/evolved..Born under a water sign I absolutely LOVE the water! Imaginative/intuitive/loyal/loving/nurturing/emotional/& protective are some of the positive traits of a Cancer..
2. My favorite saying that I try hard to live by? LIVE, LOVE, LAUGH.
3. Not many people I’ve met and/or friended in my entire lifetime; that I’m not still good friends with. Including both of my X’s & my X inlaws..My Xmominlaw still calls me daughter & even cross-country we speak often. I treat people as I want to be treated. What you see is what you get..IF I don’t care for ‘ya? I won’t spend time around you. There aren’t many people I can’t find at least one nice thing to say about them..
4. I am an admitted NEAT freak! I can’t think clearly in cluttered or dirty environments…
5. I absolutely LOVE talking to people! Not too many places I go(even the library..though I try to whisper) that someone doesn’t speak to me. This I feel has allowed me to meet people of ALL backgrounds/cultures/genders..love IT
6. I hated liver as a child. I STILL hate it as an adult. Exclamation mark. Period.
7. If I break bread with a person it means I consider them a friend..Meal times were always special times when I was growing up. And for me? It still is.
7 Moments I Hold Dear in my Heart=
1. The moment I held each of my 3 sons in my arms moments after they were born..NOTHING in my life tops that.
2. The first time my Daddy told me he was proud of ME.
3. The moment I realized as a young woman; that my Momma was always going to be my best friend.
4. The moment my now ex husband told me he couldn’t see his life without me in it..And is one of the reasons we’re still good friends till this day. (even cross-country)
5. The moments I watched my sons graduate from high school/graduate school/and soon we’ll watch our first family PhD graduate. It’s so very nice to be a part of such progression..
6. Being able to help host a 50th wedding anniversary dinner/party for my parents last year…Their LOVE has been an amazing thing to see/watch all of my life
7. When I stood on a California spoken word stage at 45 yrs old with knees & nerves shaking to perform a tribute I’d written to Black Women…Some of the beautiful moments in life are the ones we think we don’t have the nerve to DO; but we do it anyway!
**BONUS BEST MOMENT** Don’t want to mess up the lucky 7 roll, BUT , I’ve got to add this..When my best friend of 30yrs plus stood in front of all at my 50th Bday bash this past July & recited a poem she’d written in honor of our friendship. I didn’t even know she wrote poetry..Amazing after 30 yrs can still learn new things about those in our lives..Truly a moment to be cherished I won’t ever, ever 4get..Mad love & regard Lizzard!!!
*It would be seriously remiss of me to not write/blog regarding Black History Month. What a great opportunity to rap /teach/share on an array of topics relative to Black History. I’m going to attempt to do a topic a day; beginning tomorrow. However, some of the topics won’t be popular ones by far. Or at least not spoken about “in the open” often at all..From reputed homophobia in the Black community to ARE Black Fathers parenting their children to massive amount of Blacks behind bars to whether the black church is relevant or not these days to why some Black women have issues with Black brothers that date White women …a ton of things I’ve written about and long to share here. I do hope all that read bring an open mind and a willingness to accept that any/all of this is merely one person’s opinion. Mine. Please feel free to share any/all viewpoints . I’m ready if you are..
~To open the dialogue I’d like to say this: For all of those out there who say they’re “not” racist because they have a Black friend! or a White friend!!…That does NOT equate to anything more or less than you’ve got a Black or White friend! And?!? I always wait for the AND part…because I’ve met people who fall into the above category who still hold racist views. Yet they don’t realize it. For instance, I’ve been in situations where people(my friends..) will talk about Black people in a negative & racist manner; and say oh! but not YOU. Wth? Am I not BLACK? But my opinion on the matter is that with honesty anything can be discussed…There IS a discernable difference between racist views and prejudice. Likewise with stereotyping vs. racist views/feelings/beliefs vs. prejudice. I sincerely believe that until these matters are discussed openly , especially with the youth involved, there won’t be a chance for progression. And if we can’t discuss race matters/issues openly during Black History month; when can WE?

Medgar Evers’ widow to deliver inauguration prayer: President Obama has chosen Myrlie Evers-Williams, widow of slain civil rights icon Medgar Evers, to deliver the invocation at his public swearing-in later this month, the Washington Post reports. This will be the first time a woman, and a layperson rather than a clergy member, has been chosen to perform the invocation.

>In my heart of hearts I think it means WE didn’t get half as much as WE deserved..Why? Because a bunch of grown men are acting like children and can’t play well together in the sand box..There was cursing! that went on and more than likely emotional ‘Boner probably broke down into tears at some point. I wish I could’ve been a fly on the wall during these sessions. Lest WE forget these folks are “civil servants” which means they work for US and are only in their LOFTY positions because of the moolah! that “common working folks” pay in taxes..which funds their salaries and LIFElong health benefits. (yep, not bad for as little as a 4 yr gig, huh? ) Well, I think at this point we all know what should’ve happened or been gained; from the deals that were on the table. And should’ve happened LONG before time wound down 2 the very last minute..Question is. Does anyone out there really think IT was something that was UNdecided till the last minute as it was reported? (and highly advertised..) I do NOT think so. My opinion? I’ll save that for the follow UP after posting what the fiscal cliff deal results mean to us:
Here is the breakdown:
>I think this is about as good as it was going to get..given the circumstances President Obama is having to work with. This is hardly as good as it could’ve been or should’ve been. I think , however, this was hammered out and deals dealt between the parties, LONG before it was announced. I, for one, am truly sick N tyeeeeed of the Hollywood staged smoke N mirrors dance that comes from D.C. Do they think we’re all that gullible? I don’t want entertainment coming out of D.C. I want positive results. I want the people I voted for , whose jobs depend on MY and your vote!, to do their dang JOB. I don’t feel fighting should be allowed during these sessions. And certainly not cursing each other out. WTH? is that about??? That isn’t professional nor does it show self discipline. I personally feeeeel if one can’t maintain professional conduct they should toss them OUT..they lose their say/vote..and then move forward. Too much time is wasted with all the in-fighting. DON’T THEY REALIZE WE ARE ALL WATCHING THEM? DON’T THEY CARE THAT THEIR CHILDREN ARE WATCHING? HOW ABOUT THE FACT THAT A COUNTRY FULL OF PEOPLE DEPEND ON THEM TO GET THINGS DONE IN A TIMELY MANNER? *exhaling* I feeeeel so much better now that I got that off my chest. Am I content with this deal? I guess so…because I know it could’ve been a whole lot LESS gained. However, the fight is far from over. Yep! In a couple months it will be more of the same ..BUT hopefully next round we’ll get a little bit more out of the deal.
